I’ve had the privilege of working with Markus and witnessing firsthand his exceptional ability to drive transformation in complex environments. As a DevOps Coach and Transformation Catalyst, Markus brings a rare blend of technical expertise, leadership, and a deep understanding of engineering culture and DevOps practices.
He is not only highly skilled in CI/CD, automation, and Agile methodologies, but also excels at coaching teams and guiding organizations through change.
Markus is a natural mentor who leads by example. His commitment to continuous improvement, clear communication, and fostering collaboration creates an environment where teams thrive. Whether it’s through training, coaching, or hands-on implementation, Markus has an unparalleled ability to inspire and empower people.
If you’re looking for someone to champion DevOps, streamline engineering processes, and drive cultural change, Markus is the person you want on your team. I highly recommend him!
A cuddly bear on sneakers, that’s what is coming to my mind when I am think about Markus.
A great guy with extensive technical, but also great soft skills. Always time for a talk, always time for advice. I had the pleasure to work with Markus as a CICD coach where we both were convinced that CICD was mainly a mindset thing instead of implementing some tools. A we also had some great fun producing our vlogs :-)
Markus is a great coach with an eye on difficulty of change, who will help every origination to the next level of development.
Over the last two years I have got to know Markus as a passionate and inspiring consultant.
His primary focus is on mindset and behavior regarding the subjects Agile Way of Working, Software Development and CI/ CD and what the individual can do to help in the transformation.
What I appreciate mostly about Markus is his ability to transfer his knowledge to the team and connect with the team in an enthusiastic way.
My teams have benefited from this on multiple occasions.
Hope to continue our way of working with you!
Markus is a very sound CICD Coach. Me and my team attended various workshops, bootcamps carried out proactively and interactively by him which led to enormous change in the way our team started working in an Agile world. His creative ideas, valuable suggestions, fruitful decisions on complex problems helped us achieve greater heights among various teams. Markus is a very fun filled person spreading laughter in work place and coaching several teams to be CICD complaint w.r.t. latest industry standards.
Under his coaching, my team achieved greater heights in CICD and we stood out in achieving various milestones and helped other teams to achieve the same.
Over the past two years, I have worked closely with Markus. Initially, he joined us as an analyst and DEVOPS engineer, responsible for maintaining the existing User Access application. Shortly after, he played a key role in setting up the new application. During this time, I came to appreciate Markus’s dual nature: cheerful and light-hearted when entering the room or when tension within the team needs easing, and deeply serious when problems arise or when it’s time to roll up his sleeves and get things done.
Furthermore, we observed that Markus possesses a natural sense of leadership. After a few months, we asked him to take on the role of Scrum Master. From that moment on, Markus clearly demonstrated his ability to take on additional responsibilities. He took the lead with clarity, motivating and guiding his team members to ensure that tasks were not only completed, but completed well. He also temporarily stepped into the role of Product Owner, coordinating not only with his own team, but also with multiple other teams and stakeholders. It wasn’t always a smooth process, partly due to the pressure of delivery deadlines, but Markus handled it with dedication.
All in all, I consider Markus a true all-rounder, someone who can contribute in many areas as described above. He is not only a hard worker, but also a great person to work with—thoughtful, approachable, and a valuable sparring partner.
In early 2024, I contributed to the organization’s readiness for the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) by co-developing a unified testing standard and policy. I translated regulatory language into actionable engineering practices, identifying the minimum test expectations needed for DORA compliance across teams.
To support this, I designed a resilience-focused test model built around five core pillars, each with corresponding approaches and measurable criteria. I also helped shape a strategic testing policy that bridged legal requirements with technical realities — ensuring clarity without overcomplicating implementation.
Though I transitioned to another role before formal delivery, the work I initiated laid the foundation for a scalable, risk-based testing framework that continues to guide the organization’s DORA alignment.
In this industry-focused book, I co-authored a practical guide for technology leaders navigating DevSecOps adoption in complex enterprise environments. The book combines DevOn’s strategic vision with real-world insights from CISOs across the Dutch corporate landscape.
Based on a series of interviews with security leaders from ten major organizations, we explored how DevSecOps principles are applied in practice — including cultural shifts, tooling choices, governance, and risk management. Each chapter offers a unique lens on challenges and success factors for embedding security into development workflows.
In addition to contributing analysis and synthesis, I also helped articulate DevOn’s perspective on how modern enterprises can scale secure software delivery. The result is a hands-on guide designed to help CISOs translate vision into action.
This project involved building two Hugo-based websites: one for personal use and one as a corporate template for DevOn. My personal site was migrated from an outdated Angular app to Hugo using the Toha theme, extensively customized to reflect my own branding and showcase my work in a lightweight, fully responsive format. It is hosted via GitHub Pages with custom domain and full source code ownership.
In parallel, I created the default Hugo-based site template used within DevOn. This template offers a consistent, professional look and feel across all consultant profiles, enabling the company to present digital résumés to clients in a unified way.
By leveraging Hugo and Go, I ensured both flexibility and performance while removing dependencies on complex JavaScript frameworks — allowing fast iteration and zero vendor lock-in.
In this book, I co-authored a practical guide for technology leaders seeking to build high-performing DevOps organizations. Building on a series of interviews with technology executives, we captured real-world insights into the challenges and success factors that drive true high performance in IT delivery.
Beyond case studies, we developed the “Steppingstone Model” — a practical framework that identifies the essential building blocks for successful DevOps adoption. This model offers organizations a clear, structured path toward higher collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement.
The book is intended both for leaders just starting their DevOps journey and those looking to scale performance further across their enterprise.
To address the growing need for a more practical DevOps foundation, I designed and co-developed the Certified DevOps Essentials training at DevOn. This in-house certification program was created as a lightweight, tool-agnostic alternative to existing offerings, which were often too theoretical or dense in format.
The course builds on years of hands-on DevOps training I delivered, incorporating proven techniques and interactive formats that had received consistently strong feedback. Our goal was to create a fast-paced training that focused on collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement — without overwhelming learners with abstract theory.
Certified DevOps Essentials became the baseline course for DevOn’s broader training portfolio and serves as an accessible first step in DevOps adoption for teams and organizations.
As an Agile coach between assignments, I actively promoted Scrum and DevOps practices within Atos and at several clients. Working with a start-up innovation team, I streamlined their Scrum processes and delivered Agile fundamentals training, inspiring team members to pursue certifications like PSM1.
Across multiple client engagements, I analyzed existing Agile processes, identified bottlenecks, and provided actionable improvement plans — including one full DevOps integration blueprint bridging business and IT collaboration.
Internally at Atos, I supported a management group in launching a client-specific training project using the Scrum framework. I facilitated structure at portfolio and roadmap levels, enabling the formation of multiple effective Scrum teams. I also helped safeguard Scrum practices and introduced Jira boards to enhance transparency and flow.
This experience strengthened my belief in the power of Agile knowledge sharing to accelerate both personal and organizational growth.
Because of Atos’ internal talent program, I was invited in 2014 to join “Trans Forward” — a large-scale cultural transformation initiative impacting over 5000 employees within Managed Services. The program unfolded in three phases: Connect, Shape, and Change, and aimed to shift mindset, behavior, and collaboration across all levels of the organization.
I acted as a mentor throughout the journey, starting with a deep-dive training week focused on preparing and supporting 250 managers. Together with a core team of coaches, I facilitated awareness sessions, open-space formats, and hands-on coaching during and after offsite events. Our goal was to embed ownership, communication, and follow-through.
The impact of our work was validated by a Denison organizational scan, which showed a measurable positive shift in culture and engagement across the business.
🧭 Internal Change | Leadership Coaching | Organizational Growth
At the ING Delivery Centre within Atos, I was invited to support an internal training program aimed at improving communication skills and customer focus among team members. The initiative involved a select group responsible for keeping the acquired knowledge active in day-to-day practice.
As a knowledge motivator, I facilitated sessions where employees could apply newly learned skills in a familiar team environment. I coached individuals to take ownership of these sessions, ensuring that methods and tools remained relevant and consistently used.
My involvement stemmed from prior insights into team processes, and it deepened my own development in personal effectiveness and mentoring. The program successfully anchored soft skills in operational settings and fostered greater individual accountability and growth.
🗣️ Communication | Coaching | Team Enablement
Since 2011, I’ve designed, developed, and deployed websites for a range of personal contacts, small businesses, and independent projects — often stepping in when fellow developers were overloaded or clients reached out directly for help.
These projects deepened my skills in content management systems (MODX, WordPress), back-end development (PHP), and front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). I regularly integrated libraries like Bootstrap, jQuery, and AngularJS to build responsive, user-friendly sites tailored to each client’s needs.
My workflow included working on a personal development domain and moving final versions to production after client approval — with documentation, CMS training, and code handoff as part of the delivery. These experiences strengthened both my technical versatility and my ability to translate client vision into effective web solutions.
🌐 Web Development | CMS | Client Enablement
Atos has selected me in 2012 as one of the High Potential employees. One year a small group of high potentials receive support and training. The high potentials received training in communication, leadership and personal effectiveness. We worked closely with C-level and helped in important projects to improve the organization.
To survive in the future, adaptability is very important. The market, competitors and customer behavior are changing so quickly that the traditional way of working falls short. Organizations must be fast and agile. Do you want your organization to move towards a new way of working that helps you with this: agile? During the masterclass Agile management and leadership, experts teach you knowledge and insights to successfully transform your own organization into an agile business organization. You will learn from the smart approach of lean start-ups and other successful innovative organizations.
